Solid Paddles

Solid paddles are made of Western Red Cedar. Using quarter sawn vertical grain material assures light weight and strength. Typically a solid paddle weighs in under 30 ounces, however this fluctuates with the specific piece of wood and overall size.

Special care is take to reinforce the blade tips with hardwood such as Ash, Holly, Maple or Walnut.

Finish is one coat of epoxy followed by two coats of oil finish. Periodic reoiling will keep the paddle looking fresh, but it is not a necessity.

Here I've colored the cedar. The black one is a laminated paddle thats been dyed and then coated with a carbon/epoxy mixture and finished with spar urethane. The red one is a solid paddle thats been dyed and coated with clear epoxy and oil. Using dye alone will let the grain show through.
