This maple handle is from a King Island single-blade paddle, number 135.3. The .3 indicates the number of modifications that the paddle underwent as the owner became more proficient and wanted different changes. The change to a "T" handle was the final modification.
#135.3 at the throat.
Solid Western Red Cedar varies in color from dark brown to nearly white. This is a medium color....
Dyed paddles. The red is a deep maroon color called Blood Red. The blue is really a blue-green color. Both are dyed cedar and coated with epoxy before oiling.
Paddle #226 was for Freya Hoffmeister. It started out looking like most other paddles. "It must be black" she says....
Paddle #226 after staining. Its proved to be popular. I used a black water-based dye and carbon-colored epoxy. It often takes a few extra coats to get it looking nice, and this can add to the lead time.

Each Beale Paddle is sequentially numbered, indicating its unique nature. Each paddle is an expression of the unique personality of the various woods. As such, no two paddles are identical. The nature of natural materials makes it extremely difficult to exactly reproduce colors from one paddle to the next. (unless its black...) Please keep this in mind when ordering your paddle.
